Once upon a time, long, long ago,
\nwhere the forest runs down to the
\nocean, a hunter lived all alone in a
\nhouse made of logs he had chopped for
\nhimself and shingles he had split for
\nhimself. The house had one room, and
\nat the end closest to the ocean there was
\na fireplace of pink and gray and green
\nboulders–the hunter had carried them
\nhome in his arms from the cliff where
\nthe forest ended….<\/p>\n

In spring the meadow that ran down
\nfrom the cliff to the beach was all foam-
\nwhite and sea-blue with flowers; the
\nhunter looked at it and it was beautiful.
\nBut when he came home there was no
\none to tell what he had seen–and if he
\npicked the flowers and brought them
\nhome in his hands, there was no one to
\ngive them to. And when at evening,
\npast the dark blue shape of a far-off
\nisland, the sun sank under the edge of
\nthe sea like red world vanishing, the
\nhunter saw it all, but there was no one
\nto tell what he had seen. <\/em><\/p>\n

This strange and beautiful book has hunters and mermaids; bears and lynxes; loneliness, love, and luck; and moments of violence and deep sadness. More than anything else it is about making a family. <\/p>\n
